Muslim Titulature, Early Islam, Islamic Numismatics, Medieval Islamic History, Arabic names, and Islamic names
Names and Titles on Islamic Coins Michael L. Bates printed 22 August 2011
This document is unfinished, and never will be. Originally, I began a simple 3x5 card file of names found on Islamic coins, to avoid some of the frustration of researching a name to identify or attribute a coin, and then have to repeat the process months or years later when I encountered the same name on another example or a different coin. Often, complicated medieval nomenclature gave rise to several cards to cross index the names and titles of the same individual. This file was augmented over the years to fill two standard 3x5 drawers, perhaps 1,500 entries. Then came the computer. After a while, it became obvious that the data should be computerized for quick searching. I was not familar with data bases, except very limited ones that could not handle the free form complexity of Islamic names, and still less with spreadsheets, but I'd become expert at working in W ordPerfect tables (a kind of spreadsheet, filled by normal word processor methods), leading to the creation of the present document which will be distributed in PDF form. Gradually, in no fixed sequence, I am transcribing
my old file cards into this document. I also add new material as I encounter it in my research. At the beginning, I used formal Library of Congress Arabic transcription for the names, but that was a bad decision. The transcriptions were hard to search and hard to transfer into different contexts outside W ordPerfect. I have therefore eliminated transliteration from the main table and added a second table at the end listing the names of persons and places along with the strict transliteration, and sometimes comments. In many ways, Arabic would be the best language for a compilation like this. The original card file enabled me to write in Arabic and other languages on the same card; the cards themselves were headed by the Arabic name and arranged in Arabic alphabetical order. The persistent difficulty in writing in two different languages and alphabets in the same document, espcially using two scripts so fundamentally different in their writing as Arabic and Roman, keeps me from incorporating Arabic into this document and properly alphabetizing the names. The user is therefore advised to use the search
function to look for names. This resource was created for difficult and uncommon names. The names of well-known rulers who used minimal titulature, such as the Aghlabids, Mamluks, or Ottomans, are mostly not here. If a name is not found: 1. Use another resource. The ANS catalog on-line, with its keyword search feature, may well lead to the description of a coin containing the name in question. The index to Bosworth, New Islamic Dynasties, might well help, as will the index to Zambaur, Genealogie. 2. Let me know, e-mail Tiesenhausen at yahoo.com. The name may have been recorded on a file card still not transcribed into this document, or I may have access to another resource. If you find omissions or mistakes in this document, let me know using e-mail Tiesenhausen at yahoo.com. I'll be happy to be able to correct it.

Dates 284 Remarks This word stands alone, below reverse on an Abbasid donative; it seems likely to be an epithet of God (cf. `Abd al-`Aziz) associated with lillah above the reverse: “to God the Glorious” or possibly associated with the caliph’s title, al-Mutadid billah al-`Aziz, “He who finds support with God the Glorious.” There is no evidence of al-`Aziz being a stand-alone personal name; although `Aziz without the article exists.

Names and Titles on Islamic Coins Michael L. Bates printed 22 August 2011 Laqab Kunya Zufar Ism Nasab Nisba Dynasty Place Dates Remarks Name is vowelled by Zambaur, Contr. Sub. No. 64. List of transliterations Transliteration principles and guide 1. In the table of names above, standard Anglo-American transliteration is used to represent the names, but without the diacritical marks (without macron above certain vowels, and dot below certain consonants) that are part of strict transliteration. This principle is adopted to facilitate alphabetization and searching. 2. Place names are never transliterated in this document, and are not included in the list of transliterations, except when they are found as A A`azim Aba Aban Abaqa `Abbad )Abbas )Abbasid Abu A)ā z im . Abā Abān Abāqā or Abaqā; spelling varies on coins. )Abbād )Abbās )Abbāsid Abū components of titles, such as Malik Diyarbakr. 3. Some variant and erroneous transliterations and transcriptions are included in the table below, as an aid to the user. The standard transliteration is shown next to the variation. The search term will then be the standard transliteration, without its diacritical marks. 4. The article al- is not taken into account for alphabetization when it is initial. It may be shown or not in transcription or transliteration. Abu alAbu’l- (The vowel of the definite article, when it follows Abu, is elided, and the long ū of Abu becomes short. This change is shown in transliteration, even though the Arabic orthography does not change.) Abu’l (see Abu al-) Adana (also written Adhana) Adhkūtakīn `Ādil A h kām . `Alim Allah A`la 5. The )ayn mark ` is taken into account in alphabetization in the main table, which is sorted by W ordPerfect, but not in the table below which is sorted as entered. Therefore, look for `A, `I, and `U below under A, I, and U as if the )ayn mark did not exist. 6. Note that derived forms of names are not always included below. It should be obvious that the diacritics of Ziyādid, for example, are the same as for Ziyād. Ahmad Ahmadil Ahmadili Al A h mad . A h madīl . A h madīlī . As an isolated word, Āl, "Family." Not to confuse with the definite article al which is attached to the following word. A)lā (the second "a" is alif maqsura, represented by the letter ya'. Ālim Allāh
